Junior Chemist
Berlin, Germany
Your role
As a Junior chemist, you will be part of NeoCarbon’s product team, working closely with Nirmal, our R&D Chemist and Anastasia, our R&D Chemical Engineer. In practice, you will support the research and laboratory work, being involved in the synthesis, functionalization, and testing of new inorganic and polymeric sorbent materials for Direct Air Capture (DAC). This work will aim in reducing the cost and increasing the feasibility of the DAC process, thus, contributing to climate change mitigation.
What you will do
- Laboratory experiments for the synthesis and chemical characterization of new DAC materials.
- Post treatment and functionalization of inorganic and polymeric materials for improved CO2 capture performance.
- Perform analytical and chemical characterization of the materials (such as FT-IR, TGA, EA) post functionalization to evaluate the yield or success of the reaction.
- Carry out different material and polymer processing methodologies with optimized conditions.
- Evaluate the carbon capture performance of the newly synthesized materials through CO2 ads/des experiments in the TGA.
- Conduct and interpret surface characterization results (such as BET surface area, porosimetry) for interpretation of surface – performance relationship in collaboration with our scientific advisor.
- Processing, organization, interpretation, and hypothesis formulation of experimental data, justify the observed performance, and propose the next steps.
- Literature review, brainstorming for next generation reactor, and small scale experiments to de-risk assumptions.
What we are looking for
- Graduate in chemistry, materials science (or related disciplines).
- Basic understanding of chemical synthesis and functionalization.
- Previous hands-on laboratory experience in synthesis and functionalization of porous inorganic materials and polymeric materials.
- Well-versed with analytical characterization such as, FT-IR, TGA, porous materials characterization.
- Critical thinking is instrumental to research. The ability to think independently, detailed analysis of results, optimizing synthetic methodology accordingly is key to development.
- An interdisciplinary, value-driven researcher with strong organizational and communication skills.
- Nice to have: M.Sc., a background on gas processing & sorption applications.
- Availability 40h/week; 6 month initially with a potential to extension.
- Passionate about climate and sustainability.
What you will get
- Work within an early fast-growing ClimateTech startup located in Berlin.
- Great learning environment in the fields of chemical synthesis and chemical engineering but also in other areas of DAC.
- Fair market standard salary.
- Possibility of working autonomously.
- Flat hierarchy and highly motivated team.
- English-speaking company with an internationally diverse team.
- Self-managed working hours (including partly remote possibility).
- Flexible holiday arrangement.
- Regular team events.
- Access to Nextbike rentals across Germany, highly subsidized membership to Urban Sports club (for meditation, Zumba, fitness, yoga, etc.), and Deutschland ticket discount.
